dat magical noise.

I always wondered why they chose straight cut gears, as opposed to helical gears. Probably would have cost a bit more, but it would have been quieter.
Look at me, implying that the noise is a bad thing

Better hope you got your timing set correctly. . . That seems like it would be a huge pain in the ass to time. I am curious of the noise though. . .

straight cut gears are quieter, but cost more as friction.
i seem to have put this in the wrong place. :(

Also, helicals have inherent axial thrust...

Its German - of course they did!
![]() 02/03/2014 at 22:03 |

when did they switch to chains?
![]() 02/03/2014 at 22:06 |

Ooh, I don't know the exact year. Mid 2000's I believe - maybe 04?

in all the engines I have been into I have never been into a 4.2 beyond extraneous things

You're not missing much.
As much as I love the way Audi's look... I really despise working on them. German engineering = bleh

that is why I stick to the n/a 5 cylinder in my 90Q

I present: the sleeve valve radial.

My straight cut gears rattle like all hell! Had custom helical gears instead of timing chain in my blown Lingenfelter 383 race motor and it was heavenly.

yea, i seem to have written dumb there, straight should say helical

Early version of Maserati 5000 GT used timing gears and it had plenty of gears. 12 operated the camshafts and there at least 4 gears more for auxiliary devices. I'm not completely sure if it had also second water pump but if it had only one the total of timing gears is 16. The engine didn't have belt at all.
